The City of Dallas
Dallas, “The Big D”, is the 3rd largest city in Texas, and the 9th largest in the nation. Now boasting a population of over 1.4 million, Dallas is an attractive destination for anyone who wants to enjoy a lower cost of living in one of the largest medical and technology hubs in the USA. It is also an educational hotspot with UT Southwest Medical School, UT Dallas, SMU, Dallas Baptist University, the Dallas Theological Seminary, Texas A&M School of Dentistry, and a multi-campus community college system.
When Dallasites are done working hard, they love to play hard. Sports fans love catching a Dallas Cowboys game, or checking out the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars. American Airlines Arena hosts massive concerts and sports events. Arts enthusiasts enjoy the many museums, along with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and nature lovers always flock to the Dallas Zoo, Dallas World Aquarium, and Dallas Arboretum. The city is also a shopper’s paradise with the Dallas Galleria front and center, and numerous world-class dining destinations.
But there are some parts of Dallas where you don’t want to be. Getting caught in these areas might make you look suspicious, and the police will definitely haul you into jail if they suspect you of wrongdoing.
Crime in Dallas
Dallas is so large and its neighborhoods so varied that you could be in a very safe area one minute, and in a violent part of town just a few streets over. Such a huge city attracts drugs, gangs, and property crime; 1 in 31 Dallas residents are targeted by theft every year.
Unfortunately, Dallas also has its share of violent crime. 1 in 129 of every 1,000 people will be the victim of a violent crime in Dallas, with robbery and assault far exceeding other violent crimes. This is much higher than the state average of 1 in 228.
Municipal and County Jails
There are two possible destinations for criminals in Dallas: City Jail, or Dallas County Detention Center. If you are arrested within the actual city of Dallas, you will be taken to one of the three detention centers in the Lew Sterrett complex: the North Tower, South Tower, or West Tower. Where you end up depends on what you’re being charged with, and whether you are intoxicated or mentally compromised at the time.
