Going to college is an important step in the life of many young people. In addition to receiving education that will allow them to pursue their chosen career, students will be taking the first steps into adulthood and independence. Unfortunately, this independence can lead to troubling situations. While at college, students may engage in behavior that could potentially lead to being arrested. Dealing with these situations can be difficult for parents, especially if their child is attending college some distance away from their home. By understanding the steps they can take to help their child get released from police custody, parents can be sure they are handling these situations properly.

Criminal Arrests for College Students

There are multiple reasons why a student may be arrested, including but not limited to:

  • Possession of drugs or alcohol - Many students experiment with alcohol and drugs, especially while attending parties or enjoying time with their friends and fellow students. Unfortunately, possession of alcohol before reaching the age of 21 or possession of any controlled substances could lead to serious criminal charges.

  • Driving under the influence - Operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal in all states. College students often underestimate the effects of alcohol, and this can lead to them making poor decisions such as getting behind the wheel of a car while they are intoxicated.

  • Assault - Physical altercations are not uncommon on college campuses. Whether it is a fight between two students or an act of violence against someone else, assault charges can be brought against anyone who is accused of using physical force, threatening to harm someone, or behaving in a provocative manner.

  • Vandalism - College students are often known for their love of pranks and practical jokes. Unfortunately, these hijinks can sometimes cross the line into criminal activity, such as keying a car or spray painting slogans on public buildings.

  • Disorderly conduct - This catch-all category can include a variety of actions, from public intoxication to urinating in public to participating in a brawl at a college sports game or party.

Dealing with the Aftermath of an Arrest

After a student has been arrested, the first thing a parent will need to understand is how to make sure they can be released from jail. In many cases, a person who has been arrested will be required to post bail, and this involves paying money to the court in order to secure a release. The amount of bail that needs to be paid will vary depending on the severity of the offense, but it typically ranges from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars.

While posting bail on behalf of a student may seem difficult when parents live a significant distance away or in another state, a bail bondsman can provide invaluable assistance in these situations. At Doc's Bail Bonds, we can work with parents to ensure that bail will be posted correctly, and we will also make sure a student understands the requirements they will need to meet after being released and during their criminal case. We can communicate with parents over the phone or via email, and we accept multiple forms of payment, including setting up affordable payment plans.
