The Lew Sterrett Justice Center is actually a complex that contains three separate detention facilities as well as the Frank Crowley Courts Building. The compound sits just west of downtown Dallas at the intersection of Riverfront Boulevard and Commerce Street. About the Lew Sterrett Justice Center
The detention centers at Lew Sterrett are designed to house up to 7,100 inmates. On average, there is a daily population of 6,500 inmates at any given time. These include people who did not post bail and are awaiting a court hearing; prisoners waiting to be transferred to a state or federal institution; and inmates who were summoned from other facilities to appear before a Dallas County judge. Lately, the jail has been packed full of pretrial inmates charged with everything from outstanding traffic tickets to capital murder. It’s not a place you want to stay for very long if you can help it.
The three detention centers in the Lew Sterrett complex are:
The North Tower: This prison is where the maximum-security inmates are held. It is the largest and most secure of the three towers. It was built in 1993 and can hold up to 3,292 prisoners. A staff of 350 employees operates the North Tower 24/7.
The South Tower: This is a direct-supervision facility. It is designed with rows of cells surrounding a common area. Prison guards have more direct interaction with the inmates and can detect problems early before they escalate into violent confrontations. The South Tower can hold up to 2,304 prisoners.
The West Tower: The smallest of the three detention centers functions as a mental housing facility. Inmates with mental illness and addiction are brought here to await their court date. It has a 1,530 inmate capacity.
Visitation at Lew Sterrett
Visitation at Lew Sterrett is limited, and visiting times depend on the inmate’s last name. Inmates may have only two visits per calendar week, with the week running from Sunday through Saturday. No children under 17 may visit during weekdays, but they may visit during open visitation hours on the weekend. All visitors must arrive at least 30 minutes before visitation hours end and must have a valid state or government-issued ID. To expedite processing, have your inmate’s booking number and tank number with you when you arrive.
Monday and Thursday: Last names beginning with A-L, 7pm to 9pm.
Wednesday: No visitation.
Tuesday and Friday: Last names beginning with M-Z, 7pm to 9pm.
Saturday and Sunday: Open visitation 8am to 2pm – all children may visit.

Lew Sterrett Justice Center
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department is charged with the care, control and custody of individuals who have committed a crime. People charged with these offenses range from a Class “C” misdemeanor (usually outstanding traffic citation) to capital murder. There are three types of individuals incarcerated in the Dallas County Jail:
- Individuals who did not post bail and are awaiting to appear in court.
- Individuals who went to court and are waiting to be transferred to state/federal prison.
- Individuals who are summoned by a judge to appear in court from another detention facility.
The North Tower was constructed in 1993, this ultramodern facility holds 3,292
The West Tower has 132 tanks and 25 single cells. The West Tower, a mental housing facility, houses a variety of classifications besides medium and maximum custody inmates. It can house up to 1,530 male inmates.
This facility, known as the South Tower, is the department’s first direct supervision facility. Inmate capacity for this facility holds up to 2,304.
