About the Dallas County Jail

Dallas Jail

Those who are arrested in the city of Dallas will be taken to the Dallas County Detention Center, or they may be transferred to this facility from a city jail in Garland, Mesquite, Richardson, Irving, Carrollton, or the Tri-City Jail. The Dallas County Jail is located at: Lew Sterrett Justice Center, 111 West Commerce Street, Dallas, TX 75202, 214-761-9025. The Lew Sterrett Justice Center is a complex that contains three separate detention facilities, as well as the Frank Crowley Courts Building.

The detention centers at Lew Sterrett can house up to 7,100 inmates. On average, the facilities have a daily population of around 6,500 inmates. These include people who have not yet posted bail and are awaiting a court hearing, prisoners waiting to be transferred to a state or federal institution, and inmates who were summoned from other facilities to appear before a Dallas County judge.

A wide variety of pretrial inmates are housed in the detention center, and they may have been charged with offenses ranging from Class C misdemeanors such as outstanding traffic tickets, all the way up to capital murder.

The three detention centers in the Lew Sterrett complex are:

  • North Tower: This prison is where the maximum-security inmates are held. It is the largest and most secure of the three towers. It can hold up to 3,292 prisoners.
  • South Tower: This is a direct-supervision facility. It is designed with rows of cells surrounding a common area. Prison guards have more direct interaction with the inmates and can detect problems early before they escalate into violent confrontations. The South Tower can hold up to 2,304 prisoners.
  • West Tower: The smallest of the three detention centers functions as a mental housing facility. Inmates with mental illnesses and addictions are brought here to await their court date. It has a 1,530-inmate capacity.
